They are using a technology that has existed before called fNIRS, but in a new way, so now they can safely objectively measure tinnitus activity in human brains. Objectively measuring tinnitus in humans has always been a struggle for science because it's such a subjective sound and it has no external source that can be measured, and the ways to measure tinnitus in animals required methods that are unsafe to humans. This could be a solution for researchers to narrow down exactly what works for tinnitus and what doesn't, without placebo interfering.
They were working on developing a much less toxic version of Regitabine, which was a drug that was proven to successfully temporarily suppress tinnitus, but had very bad long term effects in humans so was discontinued. However, they ran out of funding to continue development on the improved version. They are now in talks with seperate drug companies that are in phase 2 trials of a very similar drug compound that's being developed primarily for use for epilepsy and depression, and they are attempting to work with these companies to see if they can adapt the drug for a clinical trial for tinnitus.
They plan to show off more data from their research and more updates in early 2026.
